It is definitely expressing mild surprise. If someone says "I must compliment you, this stew is delicious!", you might well say "Why, thank you!", because you weren't expecting the compliment, it was a bit of a surprise.

Pritom tie s iste slová - You are not lretty znamenajú niečo úplne iné
Tí dvaja majú isto doma veselo, aj keď nie v posteli.
ja skor nerozumiem tomu "Why thank you sir". Why "why"?
